CHAPTER 29

By the time Mike and I ended up at Cal and Virginia’s condo, both of us were exhausted from worry and upset. I frowned in concern when I saw Sweet Pea slip and lose her footing when she greeted us. I picked her up and was amazed that she seemed so light, like she’d lost some weight. Sweet Pea was aging. I kissed her furry cheek and carried her inside, holding her tight to me. I greeted Maggie and David. They’d be flying back to Las Vegas the day after tomorrow.

It was nice for the six adults to sit together and relax with a cocktail while Jack was quietly engrossed in playing a video game on the TV screen. Cal, Mike, and I began to update the others about what was happening with Angela.

“I can’t believe that they’re making her spend the night in jail!” exclaimed Virginia.

“I agree,” said Maggie. “That doesn’t seem right. Were the other people involved going to spend the night in jail too, or is it just Angela?”

I shrugged, and Mike said, “Harry’s lawyer was fighting that when I left the station earlier, so who knows?”

“I’ll be happy when Harry gets payback for trying to get Angela involved in all that he’s been doing!” protested Virginia. “I don’t want him to get away with it just because he has a fancy lawyer.”

“Well, all you have to do is discover where he’s hidden the rest of the stolen property,” I said in a teasing manner, patting her hand.

“You mean if all the stolen items can be found and tied back to Harry, Angela will be free from it all?” Maggie asked.

“Exactly. It’s that simple; yet, we have no idea where it could be hidden since the police have already searched Harry’s house, and they can’t find anything,” I sighed.

“It has to be somewhere. The question is where?” David said.

“Mama?” Jack said as he turned to face us.

“Yes, sweetheart, what is it?”

“What are you looking for?”

“All the stolen items that were taken in the recent robberies around town,” I answered.

“Do you mean all that stuff that Harry has stolen?”

“Yes. Why?”

Jack remained quiet.

“Do you know where it is?” I asked.

Never one to expand his words, he replied, “Yup,”

Astonished, we all stared at him until Mike asked, “Where is it, Jack?”

“It’s in the doghouse,” he said casually.

“If I remember correctly, Harry doesn’t have a dog because he’s allergic to them. Are you sure, Jack?” I asked.

“Yup, I’m sure. It’s in the doghouse.”

“How do you know that, Jack?” asked Maggie.

“When I heard you were talking about it, the answer came to me, and the voice is never wrong,” he stated as a simple fact.

We looked at each other in amazement. Finally, Mike excused himself to call Coyote. For nearly an hour, we waited on pins and needles until we heard Mike’s phone ring. We watched his face crumble with the news. “There’s no doghouse on Harry’s property. Sorry, Jack, I guess the voice was wrong this time.”

Jack frowned. “No, Daddy, the voice is right.
